Here's A COMPLETE Tour Of My 1977 Mack CF-600 FIRETRUCK

I bought a 1977 Mack CF-600 from the Arcadia, KS fire department for $3,000. This old truck must have been mind blowing when it was new and it's still wildly cool today. From the huge 6 cylinder Mack diesel engine to the PTO driven pump the drivetrain still puts in work. The emergency lighting and sirens still hang with the new stuff. And there's enough storage to move out of a small apartment. We're going on a complete tour of the fire engine and showing you everything you need to know about it.

I put 25 years on in my Department, and retired 8 years ago. As a Rookie, our city had 2 retired Macks from FDNY. Some years before I joined, our chief had the brilliant idea of buying 2 of them, as a cost saving measure. He wasn't as brilliant as he thought. They arrived on flatbeds....they had to. Both had written across the windshield "Sold Do Not Scrap".....They absolutely were worn to the point of near death. I remember sitting in the enclosed jumpseat, with the biggest headache and ready to puke from the exhaust leaking up into the cab. Hot as hell, and probably didn't help our hearing either. My very first fire, she would not go into pump gear....What pieces of shit....

The body is not made by mack, the transmission is made by Allison, and the pump is made by Waterous. The only thing made by mack here is the cab, chassis, and engine.

Brings me back... First engine I drove as a rookie in 1985. Our CF-600 was a reserve engine at the time. It had a non-synchro manual transmission so you had to double clutch and match rpms to shift. It was a V-6. When you got the hang of it, with the short wheelbase, it was so cool to drive. When I was an engineer, I had the experience of pumping with it (and other pumpers) to Chicago FD’s Big John deluge gun, 6-7-1, at the East Chicago tire fire in 1994 alpost.info/mine/h5qu3n-2rGm1p4k/video . We later donated the rig to the Hall of Flame fire museum in Phoenix. It was fully restored in 2004 by the museum. I retired as the vehicle maintenance officer. I spent many hours in, on, and under that CF. Thanks for the memories.

EMERGENCY ENGINE SHUT OFF IS A SPRING LOADED FLAP IN THE AIR INTAKE, NOT A FUEL SHUTOFF. IN A RUNAWAY DIESEL, IT IS RUNNING OFF OF IT'S OWN OIL THAT IS BYPASSING THE RINGS, NOT DIESEL FUEL. A FUEL SHUT OFF WOULDN'T HELP IN A RUNAWAY. IF IT IS ACTIVATED, THE TRUCK WONT START UNTIL YOU RESET THE FLAP. YOUR TRUCK DOESN'T HAVE GLOW PLUGS, LOL. THEY ARE COMPRESSION FIRED; ONLY LIGHT DUTY TOY TRUCKS (I.D.I.) USE GLOW PLUGS. MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOUR TRUCK DOESN'T HAVE A PTO, THEY USE TRANSFER CASES, WHICH WILL GET DESTROYED IF OPERATED LIKE A PTO. THE DEVICE THAT YOU DESCRIBED AS A FOAM NOZZLE IS NOT A NOZZLE, IT IS AN AERATING DEVICE TO ADD TO A NOZZLE FOR MORE "AIRY" FOAM. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED ON PURCHASING THE PERIOD CORRECT MOTOROLA RADIOS, THE BOOSTER REEL NOZZLES, LADDERS, AND THE LITEBOXES; MESSAGE ME.

What a rig! This is a true definition of a bulldog! Just for future reference, the transmission in this is an Allison HT740 4 speed automatic, one of the toughest transmissions Allison has ever built. Now the next thing you need to do to this monster is straight pipe it so we can all hear that Mack engine singing as you're going down the road!

Just an FYI, don't pull the emergency engine stop. Most likely it isn't a fuel cut off switch because if the engine was running away burning its own oil then cutting the fuel wouldn't do anything. It is most likely a valve of some sort on the engine intake that will shut off all intake air to the engine. I say don't pull it because some models can not be reset from inside the cab to stop people from trying to restart it.

Some nomenclature pointers: The hard rubber hose on the reel we called a booster line. Maybe discharge 5 or labeled booster. VERY handy because it can be charged (pressurized) on the reel and great for small fires, dumpsters, grass fires etc. Scrounge up an adjustable fog nozzle for that and you can use it too! The packings in the pump dont like to be dried out but the pump cant be wet and frozen either. Read up on the pump so that it does not get damaged. My memory tells me that Mack used HALE pumps. Mack was a rare fire engine manufacturer in that they built the whole truck save for maybe the pump itself.

Very nice. I fought many fires from a similar 1970 CF600 that had been FDNY from Staten Island. We bought it when FDNY retired it and redid the bodywork. Made the tank smaller and put a hydraulic reel in the back that carried 1500 ft of 4 inch supply hose. It was our water supply engine.Have fun with yours.

I have seen the numerous comments here on the gold color bulldog. Since most of them didn't match up with what I thought the gold bulldog meant, I went right to Mack Trucks. What they informed me was that the meaning of the gold bulldog has CHANGED over the years. Too much to post here. If you're interested, go to the Mack website and find their history page. From there find the link for bulldog history, then meaning of color. In the case of THIS pumper, it means it has a Maxidyne diesel and Maxitorque transmission.

The headset connection at the pump panel allows the engineer (driver / pump operator) to access the vehicles radio remotely so they can hear other vehicles and communicate with handheld radios on scene. The push to talk on our engines keys the radio.

I was a driver engineer from that era. New engines of that era went new for $ 70 to 80k. I drove a pretty well optioned American LaFrance 1250 gpm. The pump on this truck does not run on a pto. There is a pump transfer case built into the bottom of the pump.. To use most of these you would set the trucks parking brakes. Then put transmission in neutral . Then select pump position on the pump selector in the cab. This would disengage the driveshaft from the transfer case to the trucks rear axle. And engage a gear train internal to the pump to drive the pump. The trucks transmission would the be placed into whatever gear selection required by the manufacturer and the transmission would lock in that gear. The driveshaft from the transmission to the pump would run the pump but was disconnected from the trucks rear axle when pumping. Be careful not to run the pump dry as you will damage it with no water. Hopefully you can find some hose and get it pumping. There are clubs that get together with antique trucks, some much older than yours. They show them off and pump them at events they call musters.

Please learn the correct terms for the things you are talking about. This is Not a Fire TRUCK. It is a Fire ENGINE. It has a pump, on board water tank and carries hose. It has no Ariel Ladder on it so it should not be called a Fire Truck. The Clips Lights switch is for the cab Amber clearance lights and the rear Red lights in the middle of the back step. The clps is an abbreviation. Retired Fire Engines will usually come with the hose real hoses. They will not usually have any other hose though. Since that Engine or fire Rig or Rig has the newer head sets for the radio and the plug in for the head set up high, that is why a lot or all of the original wiring has been cut from the original radio controls behind the chromed door lower down next to the pump panel. You called that area the pump control panel. The fire service cuts that down to just Pump Panel.

A few things: That 120v shoreline plug is an auto-eject. As soon as the alternator spins, it fires out the cord... no button for it. That e-stop kills the motor with a fuel cut on top of the engine. You’ll have to get to the intake manifold to reset it, and it’s a complete @&$%# to get to. I’d leave that one alone. That Q-siren is clicking its brake when you push it. I’m guessing that’s the siren brake button. Look for a little black pedal on the floorboard that runs it. The air check valve is just past that air plug. It’s a simple one-way valve, common part. Streamlight firebox flashlight: you have to do it. Nice wheels, bro!!
